For my birthday last month I wanted two things: pie — not cake — and appetizer-style tidbits that I don't eat often. A Haydel's apple hand pie and a Purple Sweet Potato Pie from High Hat Café satisfied my pie jones. For the appetizers, we improvised stuffed mushrooms and stuffed dates. First, we filled the mushroom caps with their chopped stems, a little minced onion, garlic, bacon, a random hot dog bun torn to bits and Parmesan cheese. Next, I took the pits out of big Medjool dates and put almonds inside some and soft cheese inside others.
